In many areas in the South African townships, girls are at risk of sexual abuse on their way to school. Due to shortage of schools in these areas, children often have to walk long distances to get to school and they are at risk during this time particularly by unemployed males who roam the streets; many of whom are socially delinquent themselves. Many end up dropping out of school due to sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy. Young boys are often recruited in gangs and many become involved in the drug trade to earn a living.

Case studies undertaken have shown a huge number of dropout children because of difficulties in learning. Learners are often negatively affected by the lack of assistance and guidance offered by teachers and parents. Many of these vulnerable children have lost their parents and are supervised by elderly guardians or members of child-headed households. The ongoing school educational tuition and holistic support structure is therefore an essential element required in each intervention with suitably trained teachers and the required resources.

This project will also ensure the orphans in South Africa have the right to quality inclusive protective education through promotion of active learning methods, a healthy physical environment, child protection in schools, numeracy and literacy skills, as well as awareness of hygiene and nutrition among children.
